Description

>> Introduction : Because today’s digital interaction relies so much on visual and textual modalities, we need to develop more digital tools that create affordances for movement awareness and that support the activation of within-body awareness as well as between-body awareness. The interconnection between cognition and affect is crucial to facilitating meaningful experiences within interactive technologies.

>> Goal of the internship : The goal of this internship is to design a movement based interactive system with physiological sensors for an artistic project around dance, somatic techniques and new technologies. The aim is to explore physiological and neurological sensors that capture patterns representing embodied experiences that are crucial in dance and body based performance and somatic practices. The artistic project will result in a dance piece integrating interactive somaesthetic technology on stage.

Research will include evaluation in dance settings, comparing movement sensor data (Kinect, accelerometers/gyroscope, EMGs) for representing movement, examining appropriate motion feature extraction from sensor data, and validating higher level semantic recognition of movement features that can combine personal, behavioral and sensorial meaning constructs.

This internship is an interdisciplinary research that will require experience design, interaction design and software engineering. The critical feature of this research is to integrate movement expertise in both the design and validation process and the interdisciplinary sharing of assumptions regarding movement, expressivity and interaction at all stages of design. It is the intention to locate these initial explorations within a relevant application that support movement awareness and creativity including dance performances and experimentation.
