To intone a note justly, a musician needs a good sense of pitch. That skill may be explored in the laboratory using psychophysical methods, involving tasks where a subject must compare pairs of tones and judge which tone is higher. Performance degrades as the frequency difference becomes smaller, suggesting that it is limited by an internal noise source that corrupts the representation of the frequencies of the two tones. However, recently there has a been growing realization that the context of preceding tones may affect these representations in a systematic way. The present project looks more closely at such context effects. The project involves the following tasks : (a) plan and carry out a psychophysical experiment designed to replicate recent studies demonstrating context effects, (b) design and carry out one or more new experiments involving ongoing pitch judgments on a sequence of tones, (c) read and understand the main literature on context effects in pitch, (d) write up the results. This project requires good programming and writing skills.
